We target health issues, which affect the well-being of the whole person; physically, emotionally and spiritually. NCBWLA advocates the need to eliminate family and childhood obesity, metabolic syndrome, HIV and cancer disparities.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter hosts an annual Health Fair in the Los Angeles Community. We provide information about health care and the need to practice lifestyle habits that promote good health. Many Physicians and Vendors from the area of health were available on-site for event participants to ask questions addressing their personal health needs. Speakers were available to discuss health needs in the areas of Metabolic Syndrome, health disparities by race and ethnicity. Our major sponsors are Los Angeles California Family Practice Academy (LACAFP), Norcal Group, City of Hope, and Councilman Herb Wesson of the 10th District.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter in partnership with Susan G. Komen celebrates women who have had breast cancer. This event allows survivors to come together and share their stories and be with family and friends that have been through their journey with them.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter partnered with the 100 Black Men of Long Beach to focus on health disparities in our communities such as HIV, Metabolic syndrome, and Obesity.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter, partnered with the 100 Black Men of Long Beach at the Taste of Soul on Crenshaw Blvd. Our goal was to educate the community on healthy eating with recipe books on cooking healthy soul food, Latin food, and American Food. Weight loss information, Metabolic syndrome information, condoms to combat HIV, pharmacy information on getting medication, books on bullying, and voter registration forms were completed. This event allowed us to discuss health issues on HIV, Obesity, Metabolic syndrome and Bullying in a festive environment. Dr. Linda James was available to answer questions and spoke with attendees on the above topics. We were pleased to be able to impact so many people in our community with the local radio station and the 100 Black Men of Long Beach.
Worship in Pink is a train the trainer program and is a collaboration between Coalition of 100 Black Women, Los Angeles Chapter Susan G. Komen La County Affiliate and faith-based organizations in the Los Angeles community. During this event, attendees are trained on breast health and how to engage their community to get involved with the cause. We provide tools needed to become breast health ambassadors and host events that will help spread the word about the importance of early detection and mammography. This training event is open to anyone willing to put on a Breast Cancer health event during the month of October which is breast cancer awareness month.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter embarked on a Weight Loss Challenge as a group. The challenge was presented to us by our Health Chair, Dr. Linda James, M.D. We were advised to log our daily food intake via apps like My Fitness Pal or to keep a paper food diary by writing everything eaten in a journal. We were given a suggested exercise regime and a start-up guide. The purpose of this challenge was to make our members aware of their food and calorie intake and to combat health challenges and obesity amongst our members.
