The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter (NC100BW-LA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established in 1986 through the visionary leadership of the Honorable Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, a trailblazing former Los Angeles County Supervisor, and Joan Sutter, a dedicated advocate for women’s rights and community empowerment. As part of a national movement committed to advocating on behalf of Black women and girls, the Los Angeles Chapter has built a proud legacy of leadership, service, and civic engagement.
Over the years, NC100BW-LA has grown into a multigenerational and multidisciplinary organization whose members represent a wide range of professional backgrounds, talents, and lived experiences. Together, they are united in their mission to uplift and empower Black women and girls through education, mentorship, advocacy, and community-based initiatives. The chapter’s work is rooted in the belief that sustainable change comes from both grassroots involvement and strategic collaboration with civic, business, and nonprofit partners. The chapter delivers impactful programming through signature events, community outreach, and policy engagement, with a strong focus on nationally identified core areas: Health, Education, Economic Empowerment and Public Policy through strategic advocacy efforts. These pillars guide initiatives that include wellness workshops, financial literacy forums, youth mentorship programs, policy roundtables, and annual scholarship awards that support the next generation of Black female leaders.
Through decades of committed service, NC100BW-LA continues to be a vital force in the Los Angeles community—championing equity, justice, and opportunity for Black women and their families. With a steadfast commitment to making a difference, the organization remains a beacon of strength, sisterhood, and progress.
